Denis Smirnov is geographer by occupation; he has been working as scientist in Russian Academy of Sciences for 10 years. At this period he has got extensive knowledge in sustainable forestry, planning of protected areas system, an efficient exploitation of natural resources.
Since 2002 he has been working in WWF Russia where he heads forest program in Russian Far East (RFE).
Currently his forest program in RFE embraces wide range of issues including GIS-analysis of natural forest values, field and remote sensing monitoring of logging activity, assistance to governmental agencies in fight illegal logging and forest protection, development of forest certification, scoring ecological responsibility of timber producers, implementation of responsible purchasing policy of wood products in international trade.
